Movies

Many movies have been made over the last 75 years exploring the stories and figures in Greek mythology. While an entire page could be dedicated to the study of these movies, I have chosen a few to include on this site that are all geared toward children and/or families, in keeping with the overall theme. Despite being over fifty years old and with sometimes hilarious props and special effects, "Jason and the Argonauts" has remained popular with audiences over the decades. "Clash of the Titans" (1981) and "Hercules" (1983) brought back the over-the-top style some twenty years later, including campy side effects and fun action sequences. That being said, the most popular family-friendly movies incorporating Greek mythology are (despite the author's disdain for them) the first two movie adaptations of Rick Riodan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series and of course the Disney animated film, "Hercules".

Television & Streaming

Much like the movies listed above, these are just a few examples of the many shows that have Greek mythology at their core and are family-friendly in nature. Wonder Woman, the television show about the DC superhero with Greek roots that ran from 1975-1979, became a national sensation and made actress Lynda Carter a cult icon and household name. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was an action-packed adventure series starring Kevin Sorbo that aired on television in the late 1990s, and fictionalized the life and stories of the Greek demigod Heracles. This series spawned a video game and spinoff series, Xena: Warrior Princess, and continues to be shown in syndication all over the world. More modern offerings include the animated series Class of the Titans, a Canadian series that aired from 2005-2009 and is available on DVD. This fun adaptation features seven teen descendants of major Greek figures, including Artemis, Heracles, and Narcissus, as they attempt to thwart the Titan Chronos from destroying the world. Most exciting of these is the upcoming Disney+ series based on Rick Riordan's series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Produced and co-written by Riordan himself, the first season of this fresh adaptation by Disney promises to be more faithful to the original books, and will release in 2024.
